Here is how the metro's roofers actually sort out, judged on what they are certified to do, how long they have done it, and whether they install the material your house needs.

Star ratings alone are a poor way to choose a roofer. A company with 600 reviews and a 4.9 might be excellent, or might simply be large and good at asking.

So this list weighs three things that are harder to manufacture: manufacturer credential tier, which requires training and audited installs rather than volume; years in business and BBB standing; and whether the company actually installs the material your roof needs.

The credential nobody explains

CertainTeed credentials roofers at three levels. ShingleMaster is the foundational tier. ShingleMaster PRO requires deeper training and verified experience. ShingleMaster PREMIER is described by CertainTeed as "the highest roofing credential, earned by the best in the business," requiring training and continuing education from owner through installer, and it is the only tier that unlocks the full SureStart PLUS warranty coverage.

Of the 49 credentialed residential roofing contractors in the Twin Cities metro: 39 are ShingleMaster, 8 are ShingleMaster PRO, and 2 are ShingleMaster PREMIER.

1. Lenz Construction — Golden Valley

One of only two PREMIER-credentialed roofers in the metro. Where Lenz separates from everyone else on this list is material range: asphalt, cedar shake and shingle, natural slate, clay and concrete tile, metal, and synthetic, including DaVinci composite slate and Brava. Most metro roofers install asphalt and either subcontract the rest or decline it.

That matters most after hail. A destroyed cedar shake roof is frequently a candidate for composite replacement funded by the claim, and very few contractors in this market can carry a homeowner through that conversation with the carrier and then actually install it. Lenz also does lead abatement, an unusual and genuinely useful line on pre-1978 Minneapolis and St. Paul housing stock.

Best for: cedar, slate, tile and composite roofs; hail claims on premium materials; older homes with lead concerns.

Honest caveat: 67 Google reviews is a fraction of the volume shops below. Lenz does fewer, larger, more specialized jobs. Judge it on the credential and the material list, not the review count.

Ninety-four years, family-owned, and the metro's reference point for architectural roofing: slate, clay and concrete tile, cedar, copper and custom metalwork, church roofs. They run a chimney and masonry division, which essentially nobody else does, so a slate roof and a failing chimney crown can be one job instead of two contractors.

Best for: historic homes, copper and custom metal, anything involving a chimney.

3. Kaufman Roofing — Burnsville

The deepest certification stack in the metro and the strongest rating-to-volume combination among the heritage firms. The Cedar Shake and Shingle Bureau credential is the one to look for if you have a real cedar roof. It is a separate, install-specific qualification most roofers never pursue.

Best for: cedar shakes, slate and tile maintenance, custom metal fabrication, south metro.

4. Northface Construction — Elk River and Minneapolis

The best rating-to-volume ratio of any roofer in this report, and it is not close. Storm and insurance restoration is the stated core of the business, with commercial low-slope alongside it. If you want asphalt done well after hail by a company that has done it thousands of times, this belongs on your shortlist.

Best for: asphalt hail replacement, north and northwest metro.

5. Krech Exteriors — Eagan

Best for: large storm claims, design-build exterior remodels.

Three generations, and a BBB accreditation going back 51 years, the longest-standing in the metro. Strong on older housing stock, ice dam removal and flat systems.

Roofing, gutters and storm restoration in the southwest metro. They publish annual Minnesota hail damage maps, which is a genuinely useful free resource whether or not you hire them.

Best for: southwest metro, gutters with the roof.

Two things to know before you call anyone

"We'll cover your deductible" is illegal in Minnesota

Under Minn. Stat. section 325E.66, a contractor may not advertise or promise to pay, waive, absorb or rebate your insurance deductible. They also may not interpret your policy or negotiate your claim unless licensed as a public adjuster.

If a contractor violates these provisions, your insurer is not obligated to consider that contractor's estimate at all, which can leave you with a signed contract and no approved claim. It is the single cleanest red flag available to a homeowner.

A roofer license and a contractor license are not the same thing

Minnesota issues a narrow Residential Roofer license and a broader Residential Building Contractor license. The roofer license covers roofing only on one- to four-unit homes and does not authorize separately contracting for gutters, soffit, fascia or downspouts.

Recent Twin Cities hail, and whether you should be looking

The most significant recent metro event was June 19, 2026, when a supercell dropped hail over two inches across northern St. Paul and golf-ball hail through the northeast and eastern suburbs: Brooklyn Park, Northeast Minneapolis, Columbia Heights, Fridley, Shoreview, Roseville, St. Paul, Maplewood and Woodbury.

The gradient was extremely sharp. The National Weather Service noted that areas a mile or two southwest of downtown St. Paul got no rain at all. Earlier events hit April 13 and June 9 to 10, 2026.

Hail damage to shingles is usually invisible from the ground. Fractures and granule loss widen through freeze-thaw cycles until the roof leaks, often a season or two after the storm that caused it. If you were under the June 19 swath and have not had the roof looked at, it is worth doing before winter.
