Best Roofing Companies in Madison and Dane County (2026)

On April 14, 2026, Dane County was hit twice — two separate rounds of hail about ninety minutes apart, ending with a 4.00" grapefruit report on Monona at 7:29 PM. Since that afternoon the question in this market has not been who is cheapest. It is who can carry a hail claim from the first inspection through a finished roof without getting the claim thrown out.

Before you sign anything in Wisconsin

Three things decide whether a hail claim goes well here, and none of them are on a roofer's brochure.

Your right to cancel is not three days from signing

Wis. Stat. § 100.65 is the statute, and the cancellation window is the part most people get wrong. The right runs until the third business day after you receive written notice from your insurer that the claim has been denied, in whole or in part. Cancel in writing — hand delivery or first-class mail — and the contractor has ten days to return your deposit. Before you sign, they also have to give you a signed statement about whether the work relates to an insurance claim, and a detachable Notice of Cancellation, both in bold type.

A roofer cannot negotiate your claim

Under § 100.65(8), a contractor may not represent or negotiate with your insurer on your behalf without your express consent, and even then only to discuss the damage, provide an estimate, or discuss repair options. Past that line it is public adjusting, which takes a separate Wisconsin licence.

Wisconsin enforces this. In October 2025 the Insurance Commissioner issued a final decision against a contractor who bundled repair work with "claim assistance" through an assignment of benefits, imposing $6,000 in forfeitures for acting as an unlicensed public adjuster. The Commissioner's office now tells homeowners not to sign agreements assigning insurance benefits to a contractor.

So a roofer offering to "handle the whole claim" is describing something they are not licensed to do. What a contractor can legitimately do is inspect, document the damage with photographs and test squares, write a line-item estimate, and meet your adjuster on the roof. There is no Wisconsin roofing licence

Wisconsin does not issue a standalone roofing licence, and storm-chase crews lean on that. What is actually required is DSPS Dwelling Contractor registration, plus a Dwelling Contractor Qualifier credential held by a principal of the business. Without it the company cannot pull a permit on your house. The tell is when they ask for the permit in your name.

Reports between 1.00" and 2.75" came in across the surrounding area through both rounds. One inch is the size at which asphalt shingles start to bruise, so nothing in that table is close to marginal.

April is also Dane County's worst hail month and it is not close: of 198 hail reports within ten miles of Madison since 2004, 79 landed in April.
