Roofing in Madison, Monona and Dane County

Our Madison office is at 2820 Walton Commons Ln, Suite 120, Madison, WI 53718, on the east side off Highway 51. We handle roofing, siding, windows and gutters across Dane County, and most of what walks in the door here started with hail.

April 14, 2026 hit this market twice

Most people remember the April 14 storm as one event. The Weather Service log says otherwise — Dane County was hit by two separate rounds about ninety minutes apart, and a number of homes took both.

Time Location Hail size
5:34 PM Maple Bluff 3.00" — hockey puck
5:37 PM Monona 3.50" — softball
5:39 PM Madison 3.25" — baseball+
7:07 PM Maple Bluff 2.75" — baseball+
7:29 PM Monona 4.00" — grapefruit, with vehicle damage

Reports between 1.00" and 2.75" came in across the surrounding area through both rounds.

One inch is the size that starts bruising asphalt shingles. Nothing in that table is close to marginal. The 7:29 PM report from Monona is the largest hail this area has recorded in years.

If your roof was under either round and has not been inspected, it is worth doing. A roof that took two impacts ninety minutes apart can look fine from the ground and still have lost most of its remaining life.

April is Madison's worst month, and it is not close

Dane County has logged 198 hail reports within ten miles of Madison since 2004. Seventy-nine of them — nearly two in five — happened in April.

That matters for timing. Most homeowners think of hail season as summer, so an April storm catches people unprepared, and the contractors who show up first are usually the ones who followed the storm in. It also means that if you are reading this in late winter, the next few weeks are the right time to have an aging roof looked at rather than the week after something happens.

Your right to cancel, and what it actually says

Wis. Stat. § 100.65 covers this exact situation, and the cancellation window is the part most people get wrong.

It is not three days from signing. The right runs until the third business day after you receive written notice from your insurer that the claim has been denied, in whole or in part. Cancel in writing — hand delivery or first-class mail — and the contractor has ten days to return your deposit. Before you sign, they also have to give you a signed statement about whether the work relates to an insurance claim and a detachable Notice of Cancellation, both in bold type.

What a roofer may and may not do on your claim

Under § 100.65(8), a contractor may not represent or negotiate with your insurer on your behalf unless you expressly consent, and even then only to discuss the damage, provide an estimate, or discuss repair options. Past that line it is public adjusting, which takes a separate Wisconsin license.

Wisconsin enforces this. In October 2025 the Insurance Commissioner issued a final decision against a contractor who bundled repair work with "claim assistance" through an assignment of benefits, imposing $6,000 in forfeitures for acting as an unlicensed public adjuster. The Commissioner's office now tells homeowners not to sign agreements assigning insurance benefits to a contractor.

What that means in practice: we inspect, document the damage with photographs and test squares, write a line-item estimate, and meet your adjuster on the roof to walk it with them. You remain the one talking to your carrier about money. A roofer offering to "handle the whole claim" in Wisconsin is describing something they are not licensed to do.

Check the credential before you sign

Wisconsin does not issue a standalone roofing license, which out-of-area crews rely on. What the state does require is registration as a Dwelling Contractor with the Department of Safety and Professional Services, with a Dwelling Contractor Qualifier credential held by a principal of the business. Without that, the company cannot pull a permit on a one- or two-family home.

Ask for it, and look it up. If the answer involves pulling the permit in your name, that is the answer.

What we do from the Madison office

  • Roof replacement — asphalt, metal, cedar, slate, tile and synthetic
  • Hail and wind damage inspection, documented with test squares and photographs for the carrier
  • Siding, windows and seamless gutters, which take hail alongside the roof and get missed on a first estimate more often than not
  • Commercial and multi-family roofing

Lenz Construction has been in business since 2012 and holds CertainTeed's ShingleMaster PREMIER credential, the highest they issue. That credential is currently registered to our Minneapolis location — we are in the process of registering Madison so it appears in CertainTeed's contractor locator here as well.

Our Madison office is newer than our Minnesota operation, and we would rather say that plainly than imply a twenty-year history in Dane County we do not have. What comes with it is a company that has been replacing storm-damaged roofs in hail markets since 2012.

What it costs

Madison labor runs close to Twin Cities rates, so replacement pricing here sits near the top of the regional band. Full breakdown by home size and material, plus how the math changes when it is an insurance claim rather than a retail job, is in our roof replacement cost guide.
