LP SmartSide engineered wood siding in Minnesota and Wisconsin
There is one fact about LP SmartSide that decides most siding conversations in a hail market, and almost nobody leads with it.
LP warrants the product against hail damage up to 1.75 inches in diameter, in every continental U.S. state, when the siding is properly installed and maintained. Not "impact resistant." Warranted.
Look at what actually falls here. The April 2026 Chippewa Valley storms produced ground reports from 1.00" to 1.75". Most Minnesota and Wisconsin hail events sit in exactly that band. LP's warranty covers the whole of it.
What the 5/50 warranty actually says
LP SmartSide carries what the industry calls a 5/50:
- Five years, 100% labor and material replacement. Not prorated. If the product fails in the first five years, the fix is covered including the labor to do it.
- 50 years, prorated material replacement. After year five, LP covers a declining share of material cost.
- Hail damage up to 1.75 inches, as above.
One detail worth knowing because most warranties do not work this way: incorrect installation does not void the entire warranty. It voids coverage on the damage that the bad installation caused. The rest stands.
What the product is
Engineered wood, not fiber cement and not plastic. Wood strands are treated with zinc borate through the whole thickness, bound with resins and compressed. The zinc borate is the part that matters in a wet climate — it is in the substrate, not a coating, so a cut edge or a nail hole is treated the same as the face.
Practically, on a Minnesota or Wisconsin house:
- It is roughly a third the weight of fiber cement, which changes what a crew can do in a day and what the walls have to carry.
- It cuts with standard woodworking tools and makes sawdust rather than crystalline silica dust.
- It comes in lengths up to 16 feet, which means fewer butt joints across a long wall. Every joint is a future maintenance point.
- It holds a nail. Fiber cement does not, in the same way.
ExpertFinish and the field-paint question
LP SmartSide comes primed for field paint, or factory-finished as ExpertFinish in a fixed palette. ExpertFinish carries its own warranty structure — a prorated 50-year on the substrate with a 15-year on the finish.
The honest trade: a factory finish is applied in controlled conditions and will outlast a field coat, but you are choosing from a set palette and a future repair means matching a factory color. Field paint gives you any color and an easier future match, at the cost of a shorter repaint cycle.
In this climate the repaint cycle on a good field coat runs roughly 10 to 15 years on south and west elevations, longer on north.
Where LP SmartSide is the right answer
- Hail-exposed elevations. The 1.75" warranty is the strongest hail position of any siding we install.
- Homes where weight matters — older framing, additions, anything where fiber cement's mass is a structural question.
- Deep trim and detail work. LP's trim boards run to widths that let you build out a real craftsman detail without ripping down fiber cement.
- Cold-weather installs. Engineered wood does not get brittle the way vinyl does when the temperature drops, which matters when the season runs into November here.
Where it is not
If the house needs a noncombustible cladding — a tight lot line, a wildfire overlay, a local requirement — engineered wood is wood. James Hardie fibre cement complies with ASTM E136 as a noncombustible cladding and is the answer there.
If the priority is never painting again and the budget allows it, steel siding has a longer hail warranty and no repaint cycle at all.
LP SmartSide and a hail claim
Siding claims are harder than roof claims, and they go wrong in a specific way.
An adjuster looks at a wall, finds six damaged boards on the north elevation, and writes six boards. That is often correct on a roof and almost never correct on siding, because siding damage is rarely limited to what you can see from the ground and the replacement question is not "can we get boards" but "can we get boards that match."
What decides a siding claim:
- Test squares on every elevation, not the obvious one. Hail comes in at an angle. The elevation facing the storm takes it, but the two adjacent ones usually took some.
- Documenting the finish, not just the substrate. A dent that has not holed the board has still broken the paint film. On engineered wood that is a moisture path.
- Establishing whether the profile and colour are still made. A discontinued profile turns a partial repair into a full elevation, and sometimes a full wrap. This is a factual availability question with a documentable answer, and it is the single largest driver of a siding claim's real scope.
- The warranty position. If the boards are inside LP's hail warranty, that is a separate conversation from the insurance one, and it can change what the homeowner actually pays.

Common questions
Is LP SmartSide better than vinyl for hail? It is warranted against hail to 1.75 inches. Vinyl is not warranted against hail by any major manufacturer, and it gets more brittle as the temperature falls, which is exactly the condition of a late-season or early-spring Midwest hail event.
Does it need painting? Primed product does, on installation and then on a cycle. ExpertFinish is factory-coated and carries a 15-year finish warranty.
Can it go over existing siding? Sometimes, but we generally do not. Going over hides the sheathing and the water-resistive barrier, which is where the actual problems are. On a hail claim it also makes the damage undocumentable.
Does LP SmartSide have a woodpecker problem? Less than cedar, more than steel. The zinc borate treatment deters insects, which removes the reason woodpeckers usually start. It is not immune.
